SAGINAW, MI — A car crash in a Saginaw residential neighborhood has claimed the life of a local woman.
About 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, police responded to the area of Mershon and Hammond streets on the city’s northwest side for one-vehicle crash. They arrived to find a black 2008 Mercedes sedan in the front yard of 2307 Mershon St.
The Mercedes had sideswiped a tree then struck a fixed basketball hoop before coming to a halt.
Police found the car’s driver, 34-year-old Ida E. Murchison, deceased from injuries she suffered in the collision. Two other occupants—a 33-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man—also sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The man was in critical condition as of Friday morning, police said.

A neighborhood resident estimated the Mercedes was traveling in excess 100 mph. Police said there was no indication Murchison was pursuing or being pursued by other motorists.
There were no skid marks on the street to indicate Murchison had attempted braking before the impact. The front lawn of where the car came to rest was marred by deep tread impressions.
Police believe the extreme speed as well as alcohol were factors in the crash.
The Saginaw County Multijurisdictional Traffic Crash Team is investigating the incident.
