It has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, graced the big screen. Ever since, while there have been several TV shows and more on the way, the futuristic space franchise has not returned to the big screen despite the announcement of a sequel before the release of the third movie.

Its loyal and huge fanbase has thus been eagerly waiting, hoping to see the cast of the rebooted saga once again. While negotiations with actors and writers have been broken several times before, the inclusion of Steve Yockey as the new screenwriter has created a significant buzz. And Paramount still hopes that the sequel to Beyond will be the last film of the rebooted movie series featuring its original cast.

Ever since Paramount took over the Star Trek franchise, this has been the longest that fans have gone without seeing a Star Trek movie on the big screen. The fourth and final movie in the 2009 movie series has been in the works for quite a long time, yet the plan has never worked out.

With Chris Hemsworth starring as Chris Pine‘s Captain Kirk’s father in 2018 to Quentin Tarantino pitching in his own movie and later not wanting to direct it, and a movie with a brand new cast being shelved in 2020, there have been several such incidents.

Fans have thus been left disappointed again and again as the studio has failed to capitalize on the loyal fan base that the franchise has garnered over the years. But that might be about to change, hopefully, as there is a new screenwriter for a fourth and potentially last movie in the rebooted saga.

Just days ago it was announced Steve Yockey, the writer/creator behind The Flight Attendant, has been roped in and is writing the script for the final movie. As Yockey is busy creating the script, Paramount still has hopes to have the 2009 cast return for one final outing in the Star Trek universe (via Variety).

Even though the space odyssey tale might have not been on the big screen for 8 years, there is no denying that fans have grown to love the cast of the 2009 Star Trek reboot. Over the years as the battle to make a fourth movie has raged on, the negotiations with the cast have fallen several times.

First, it was Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth who bid farewell to a scrapped 2018 film (via THR). And then, despite the public announcement of a fourth movie starring the 2009 cast in 2022, the lead stars were not notified or even re-offered their roles leading to their representatives proclaiming that they only got to know the details via the public announcement (via The Hollywood Reporter).

While we do not know whether the cast has been notified this time or not, Paramount does want the original 2009 cast to return. The original 2009 cast includes Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zoe Saldaña as Lt. Nyota Uhura, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy, John Cho as Lt. Hikaru Sulu as well as Simon Pegg as the chief engineer Montgomery Scott (via Variety).

As for the story, release date, and other details, there has not been any update so far. There hasn’t been any confirmation regarding whether the 2009 cast will return or not.

Meanwhile, the Star Trek franchise can be streamed on Paramount+.
