BUTTE COUNTY — The day to celebrate our fallen heroes is on Monday, and there are plenty of events going on in Chico and the surrounding areas.
The public is invited to attend these free events to help honor members of the military who proudly served America and gave their lives for our country.
The Chico Chamber of Commerce will host a Memorial Day drive-through event Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Chico Cemetery located at 881 Mangrove Ave. Free hot dogs, chips, soda and gift bags will be handed out.
American flags will be set up on Mangrove Avenue along the cemetery.
In Oroville, there will be a beach party at Riverbend Park, also on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park is located at 50 Montgomery St. There will be water activities and a barbecue.
On Monday, Memorial Day itself, there will be another event at the Chico Cemetery at 10 a.m., with a band playing at 9:30 a.m. Over in Glen Oaks Memorial Park at 11115 Midway, there will be a ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. Hundreds of American flags will be displayed at both sites.
At Chico Cemetery, there will be a symbolic laying of wreaths by several organizations to honor the fallen; music by the Chico Community Band; and a 1921 Model T hearse along with an antique horse-drawn hearse on display.
At Glen Oaks, members of the Butte County Scottish Society will play significant songs on their bagpipes, and an Iraq War veteran who was present when the statue of Saddam Hussein was toppled will speak.
In Paradise, American flags will be set up along Skyway early Sunday morning. On Monday, there will be a Memorial Day event from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Paradise Veterans Memorial hall located at 6550 Skyway.
